Thermal Degradation
Heat management is one of the least visible battles in Formula 1, and one of the most decisive over a race distance. Two systems dominate the conversation: brakes and tyres.
The operating windows
- Critical: above 120°C surface temperature, carbon-carbon brake discs begin to lose consistent friction coefficient.
- Optimal: 90–110°C is the sweet spot most current tyre compounds are designed around for peak grip without accelerated wear.
- Cold: below 80°C core temperature, tyres struggle to generate peak grip at all — a common problem on out-laps and in changeable weather.
Why it drives strategy
Teams that can keep components inside their optimal windows for longer effectively get more usable pace out of the same physical parts — which is why brake duct design and tyre-blanket practice remain such closely guarded details, even in an era of extensive TV coverage.
